Chess is a game that once you learn how to play, you will enjoy it forever. While learning the game, students develop skills in critical thinking, focus, sportsmanship and self-esteem. This course is suitable for the novice chess player. As long as you know how the pieces move and the basic rules of play, this is the class for you!

Class Structure

During each class, we may spend time working on micro drills to improve tactics and visualization as well as studying training games where each move, from start to finish, is examined and explained. The last portion of each class may be spent trying to put the lessons learned from the example game into practice in our own games against our fellow students.  Optional self-study materials will be provided.

Instructor Ed Larson is an active tournament player currently rated in the 1700 to 1800 (USCF) range.
