Placement Partner Program

Orange County Animal Services (OCAS) recognizes and values the hard work and dedication of area rescue organizations.  We all work toward the common goal of saving lives and placing adoptable, healthy animals into loving, permanent homes. And, we know that only by working together can we be more successful in finding happy endings formore of our animal companions.

OCAS offers many cost saving benefits to rescues, including vaccines and some medical services, at no cost!  In addition, we offer sterilization and microchipping services for very low fees for cats and dogs transferred to rescue groups.

We invite your organization to join us in our efforts to improve the lives of companion animals in Orange County!

How Do I Become an OCAS Placement Partner?

Disease Prevention & Control

Disease prevention is one of our most serious concerns at OCAS.  All animals that enter our Shelter Division are given a medical examination upon intake to screen for disease.  Additionally, animals are given standard vaccinations and tested for major medical problems, such as Feline Leukemia, FIV and Heartworm disease, as appropriate for age and species

No Cost Medical Services

All cats and dogs receive the following standard services at no cost to Placement Partner Organizations:

  • Physical exam
  • Heartworm test (antigen test; dogs 6 months and older)
  • Felv/FIV test (felv only for cats younger than 6 months)
  • Rabies vaccination (if older than 3 months of age)
  • DHPP vaccination (dogs and puppies 6 weeks and older)
  • FVRCP vaccination (cats and kittens 6 weeks and older)
  • Bordatella vaccination (dogs and puppies 3 weeks and older)
  • Deworming
  • Heartworm preventative
  • Flea/Tick Treatment ( Frontline, Advantage or Promeris)

In addition to these standard services, all animals are given a basic evaluation to screen for aggression, and most dogs are given a more in-depth behavioral evaluation during their stay with us.

Low Cost Sterilization & Microchip Options

Our state-of-the-art in-house spay/neuter suite and medical program allow us to offer discounted sterilization performed by licensed andexperienced veterinarians.  We are also able to provide microchip implantation to cats or dogs before it is transferred into the rescue organization.  These optional services offer huge savings and convenience for our partnering organizations, & are available for the following rates:

  • Neuters  (dogs and cats!)              $30
  • Spays (dogs and cats!)                      $60
  • Microchipping (24 Petwatch)           $25

Communication

When a Placement Partner chooses to work with OCAS, we want to ensure that the partnership is one that lasts and that there are no surprises.  Therefore, we partner under a specialized set of guidelines that have been developed to specifically address the needs and expectations of both OCAS and our Partner Organizations. We also ensure that every dog or cat a Partner Organizations receives comes with a full medical record,  temperament record and memorandum of any special circumstances or additional treatments it may need in the future.

Orange County Animal Services aims to provide a mutually beneficial program to all of our Placement Partners.  We achieve this through our strict standards of care and by working with our partner organizations to place as many sound animals as possible.  We strive to make it easier for our placement partners to continue to offer their services to the people and animals of Orange County and beyond.

Guidance & Regulations for Transport of Animals Outside of NC

Domestic companion animals must be moved to the state of destination in accordance with that state's laws.  If you are taking a dog, cat or ferret from NC to another state for any reason, you must comply with all importation requirements set forth by the state of destination, which often vary from state-to-stae.  Click here for more information on these important requirements.
