RSVP-VITA: Free Income Tax Assistance

The RSVP 55+ Volunteer Program is seeking volunteers to assist low to middle-income clients with preparing their tax returns, in turn making a difference in their lives.

VITA (Volunteer Income tax Assistance) provides FREE federal and state income tax preparation to qualified individuals with low to middle-income, regardless of age or county of residence.

RSVP-VITA Seeking Volunteers for 2015 Tax Season RSVP-VITA Volunteer Elly Kealey assist a VITA client.

Opportunities range from interpreters, telephone team, tax preparers and more.

Volunteer Orientation:

Individuals interested in learning more about the program should attend one of the following orientation sessions or call the RSVP 55+ Volunteer Program at 919-245-4243:

  • Saturday, November 8, from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., Seymour Center, Chapel Hill
  • Wednesday, November 19, from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., Central Orange Senior Center, Hillsborough
  • Thursday, December 4, from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., Seymour Center, Chapel Hill

Small Group Training for New Preparers:

Training to orient new preparers to online tax law training, practice problems and tests. Space is limited. To register call, 919-245-4243.

  • Wednesday, November 12, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Seymour Center, Chapel Hill
  • Saturday, November 15, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Seymour Center, Chapel Hill

FREE VITA Volunteer Training (all assignments):

RSVP will provide FREE training in January 2015 for all VITA volunteer assignments. Watch for training details closer to January.

VITA provides FREE federal and state income tax preparation to qualified individuals with low to middle-income, regardless of age or county of residence. The Orange-Chatham RSVP-VITA Program will begin scheduling appointments after January 15. The VITA service starts early February 2015.

      • Take a brief survey (coming in January) to see if you qualify for VITA services

Services Provided:

  • All services are FREE, including electronic filing and accuracy Quality Review
  • Computerized Federal and State tax returns
  • IRS-Trained and Certified VITA Volunteers
  • Tax Credits: volunteers identify all entitled taxpayer credits (credits may lower tax debt or increase refund)

  • Since the early 1980s, the Orange County Government has consistently been a provider of the RSVP-VITA service, ensuring that the County's taxpayers have access to and can benefit from this free service. 
  • In the 2013 Tax Season, a total of 108 RSVP-VITA volunteers at 8 VITA tax sites in Orange and Chatham Counties served more than 1,800 clients.
