RSVP-VITA Free Income Tax Assistance

VITA is an Orange County RSVP Volunteer Program that provides FREE federal and state income tax preparation to qualified individuals with low-to-middle income, regardless of age or county of residence.

For an appointment in Orange County, call 919-245-4242 (English) or 919-245-2010 (Spanish)

For an appointment at the Chapel Hill Public Library, call the Compass Center 919-968-4610. Please do not call the library. Compass Center will not be a VITA site this year.

For an appointment in Chatham County, call 919-542-4512 (English) or 919-742-1448 (Spanish).

VITA SERVICES

IRS W-2 and 1040 forms graphic

*All services are FREE, including electronic filing and accuracy Quality Review.

  • Computerized Federal and State tax returns
  • IRS-Trained and Certified VITA Volunteers
  • Tax Credits: volunteers identify all entitled taxpayer credits (credits may lower tax debt or increase refund)

WALK-INS

 

While appointments are preferred, clients without appointments will be fit in if time permits. Walk-in clients must arrive at least 2 hours before the tax site closing time for the possibility of being served.

If you purchased health care insurance through the www.healthcare.gov Marketplace, you will need to bring related documents.

Non-English speaking clients must bring an interpreter.

WHERE TO GO

 

Locator graphicTax assistance is available at our senior centers in Chapel Hill and Hillsborough. In addition, tax assistance is available at the Chapel Hill Public Library and the Chatham Council on Aging. For inclement weather, contact the facilities main phone number or main web site.

Help schedule appointments or make reminder phone calls. The telephone team will read from a script to screen clients for eligibility and to inform them of the records they need to bring.

Support Coordinators

Help clients with the check in/out process, which involves greeting clients, organizing their documents, assisting with forms. This opportunity is ideal for a people-person who is organized, pays attention to detail and enjoys assisting others.

Both groups of volunteers will receive free training and ongoing support.

HISTORY

 

Since the early 1980s, the Orange County Government has consistently been a provider of the RSVP-VITA service, ensuring that the County's taxpayers have access to and can benefit from this free service. 

In the 2013 Tax Season, a total of 112 VITA volunteers at 8 VITA tax sites in Orange and Chatham Counties served more than 1,800 clients.
