Equal Justice Under the Law: Are We There Yet?
A Reflection on the 50th Anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act
The Orange County Human Relations Commission will host its Annual Human Relations Month Forum on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at the Carrboro Century Center from 2:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. The year 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This law, known as the nation’s benchmark civil rights legislation, paved the way for such laws as the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the Fair Housing Act, and the American’s with Disabilities Act.
Our esteemed panelists will discuss current civil rights issues, including the Voter I.D. legislation. We will also hear from local heroes who were involved in the sit-ins at North Carolina A & T and those who represented victims of illegal discrimination. It will be a powerful presentation and discussion that will address whether we have achieved equal justice under the law.
There will be food and live entertainment presented by Lynn and the New Monarchs. The event is free and open to the public.
