2009 Summer Programs
Registration will run from Monday, May 11 through Thursday, May 28, 2009. Parents must pre-register their children in person at the library where they will be attending programs. No phone registrations will be accepted. Registration will be limited to individuals with library cards.

Summer Reading
Summer Reading Events will be offered at the Orange County Main Library, the Carrboro Branch and the Cedar Grove Branch.
Summer Reading Registration
Summer Reading registration will begin Monday, May 11, 2009. Parents must pre-register their children in person at the library where they will be attending programs; No phone registrations will be accepted. Registration will be limited to individuals with library cards.
Lapsit Programs @ Orange County Main Library
Lapsit will be held Tuesdays from 10:30 to 11:00 am at the Orange County Main Library in Hillsborough. This program combines music, finger plays, stories and more for babies ages 1 to 2 years. Space is limited; Registration required. 1 parent - 1 baby.

Summer Reading Performances @ Orange County Main Library
From Wednesday, June 17 through Wednesday, July 22, the Orange County Main Library will offer a wide range of performances each Wednesday morning from 10:00 am to 11:00 am for children ages 3 and up. Registration required.

June 17, "Fish the Magish Magic Show" - Mike Fisher will dazzle us with his Magic Show filled with magic, comedy, audience participation, balloons and surprises for all ages.
June 24, “Once Upon a Time” presented by Bright Star Children’s Theater - This fast-paced adventure brings to life the stories of Cinderella and Jack and the Beanstalk in an unforgettable, hilarious, high energy production, sure to please parents and children alike.
July 1, "Birdman Dave's Live Bird Show" - Back by popular demand, Dave Gulick presents “How Birds Learn to Read,” with Belle, the green winged macaw, and Christopher Columbus, the horned owl.
July 8, "Fred Motley" - African storyteller-extraordinaire will perform Anansi stories, games, and more in a lively participatory romp for all ages.
July 15, "Baron Von Rumblebuss" - Kids Music that Rocks! Don’t miss this foot stompin’ ride with local musician Tray Batson. The Baron is Back!
July 22, “Creating Jack Tales” presented by Rags to Riches Theater - The stories of Jack and the Bean Tree, Jack and the Melon Patch, and Bean Tree with a Beard will be woven together for a rollicking good story with audience participation and laughs for all.
Summer Reading Events @ Carrboro Branch Library
On select Sundays, the Carrboro Branch Library will offer a wide range of creative events in the McDougle Cafeteria. Please see event schedule below for times and details. Registration required. Contact the library at (919) 969-3006 for more information.

RESCHEDULED: June 21 from 3 to 4 pm, "CLAWS: Creative Learning about Wildlife Species" – CLAWS, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to helping wild and exotic animals, through educating the public as well as rescuing and rehabilitating those animals in need. Join us for this exciting program, as we learn about and even meet some endangered animals. All ages.
June 28 from 2 to 4 pm, "Pottery Workshop with David Gould" – David Gould returns to the CBL for his always popular face jug workshop. Completed jugs will be fired off-site and available for pickup at the CBL after two weeks. All supplies are included, and advance registration is required. This class is limited to 30 students.Ages 4 and up.
July 12 from 3 to 4 pm, "Baron Von Rumblebuss" – Baron Von Rumblebuss has come to our planet to share his music with its most enthusiastic inhabitants, The Kids! Tray Batson is a performing musician, singer/songwriter, actor and music therapist who specializes in developmental music for toddlers and elementary school age children. We hope to see you there for a rockin’ good time! All ages.
July 19 from 3 to 4:30 pm, "Summer Reading Program Finale with Ron Jones" – Join us as we create a fractured fairytale, write a song, and choreograph a dance to it with storyteller and musician Ron Jones. We’ll draw a Lion, an Igris, a Bear, two Rabbits, an Aardvark, and a Yak all from the word LIBRARY! All ages.

Tuesday June 23rd, "The Adventures of Treasure Island" presented by Bright Start Children’s Theatre - Based upon the Robert Louis Stevenson classic, Treasure Island, a pirate-filled adventure. The audience will love the sea shanty sing-along and the opportunity to join our actors on-stage as part of Long John Silver’s fearless crew!

Tuesday, July 21st, "Summer Reading Program Finale with Fred Motley" - Storyteller extraordinaire will present an array of fun African stories and music with very interactive participation.

Arts Camp @ Orange County Main Library
On select Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 pm, the Orange County Main Library will offer Arts Camp for ages 6 to 11. Abrakadoodle offers leading-edge art education classes that are both fun and educational. In our multicultural classes,children learn about contemporary and master artists and artistic techniques from around the world. Incorporating books and music to facilitate multisensory learning, children use a wide variety of media and develop a vocabulary to talk about art. Each class results in a unique finished product ready to be taken home. Pre-registration required.
Scheduled Art Orange County Main Library Arts Camp Programs:
June 17, "Bearden Doodle" - Learn about Romare Bearden, a North Carolina artist, who created colorful collages. We will make our own collage masterpiece using different shapes & papers, similar to Bearden's technique from his artwork, "Empress of the Blues".
June 24, "Gustav Klimt-Tree of Life Doodle" - Students will learn about Gustav Klimt, the founder of the Art Nouveau movement in Vienna, Austria. We will use recycled materials (please bring a paper towel tube), use lots of curvy lines, circles and ornamental patterns to develop our own picture in the style of Klimt's The Tree of Life.
July 15, "Shel Silverstein Doodle" - Do you enjoy reading Shel Silverstein's books of cartoons and poetry? We will learn simple line illustration, understand the use of humor in drawing and practice drawing various landscapes and cityscapes before drawing our very own personal "falling up".
Summer Science Camp: Discover the World of Chemistry

Summer Teen Programs
Teen Arts Camp
Participants must pre-register between May 11 and May 28, 2009. Interested participants must visit the Orange County Main Library to register; No phone registrations will be accepted. Registration will be limited to individuals with Orange County Public Library cards.
On select Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 am to 11:30 am, the Orange County Main Library will offer Arts Camp for rising 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Snacks and drinks provided. Pre-registration required; space is limited.
Scheduled Arts Camp Programs:
Tuesday, June 16 & Thursday, June 18, "Mosaic Mirror Workshop" - In this is a 2 day workshop with with local artist Paula MacLeod, participants will create an original mirror frame using the “pique assiette” (pee-kay ah-see-ette) technique which means "stolen from plate" in French, (broken plates). Wear old clothes, you will get dirty!! You must attend both days in order to end up with a finished piece.
Thursday, June 25, "Recycled Crafts " - Learn how to make bottle cap pins, paperback wallets, Shrinky Dinks, and other fun crafts with reused household items.
Thursday, July 23, "Fantastic Journey Posters" - Create Journey Posters with local artist and ArtsCenter teacher, Rachel Galper. You will be using mixed media—paint, fabric, found objects, and more to convey an inner journey or an outer one, from one state or place to another.
Summer Science Camp: Discover the World of Chemistry

Parents must pre-register their children in person at the library where they will be attending programs. No phone registrations will be accepted. Registration will be limited to individuals with library cards.
This half-day camp for rising 6th, 7th and 8th graders will give students laboratory experience on board Morehead Planetarium and Science Center’s Destiny traveling science learning program. The Destiny laboratories are 40-foot buses that bring the latest science and technology equipment to students across North Carolina. Pre-registration required; space is limited.

Science Camp @ Orange County Main Library will be Thursday, July 9th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.
Science Camp @ Cedar Grove Branch Library will be Tuesday, July 14th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. |
