Permanent Residents

All Orange County residents are eligible for a free Orange County Public Library (OCPL) card.  Residents of Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Durham, and Person counties are also eligible for a free OCPL card.

Your OCPL library card allows you to borrow materials, use library computers, manage your online account and access our online resources.

To get a library card, visit one of our library locations to:

  • complete a brief registration form,
  • present a photo ID, and
  • provide verification of your current address, such as a Drivers License, lease or bill that displays your name and current address.

Nontraditional Residents

A photo ID is always required to obtain a full-privilege card. However, if an Orange County resident is unable to provide proof of residency, alternate arrangements may be made at the discretion of the Circulation Supervisor or Branch Manager.

Individuals not eligible for a free card may obtain an OCPL library card with full privileges for an annual fee of $25.

Carrboro Branch Cards

Due to its joint-use location, the Carrboro Branch utilizes a catalog and circulation system that is separate from other Orange County Public Library locations. Cards issued at other library locations can be activated for use at the Carrboro Branch Library.

Replacement Cards

Forgotten Cards

Customers with accounts in good standing can access library services without a library card upon presentation of a photo ID. However, to ensure that the card has not been lost or stolen, on the next visit to the library both a library card and photo ID will be required in order to access library services.

Lost Cards

At Orange County Public Library, a customer can obtain a replacement for a lost library card by paying a $2.00 replacement fee.
