November 24, 2014 - The Orange County Public Library is celebrating this holiday season with a wide variety of free activities, programs and services. Several special events for all ages are planned at the Main Library. The public is encouraged to include these on the list of holiday stops!

November 11, 2014 - The Orange County Public Library (OCPL) invites customers to reduce or eliminate their library fines, while making the season bright for fellow County residents. From November 17 - December 12, all OCPL locations will accept donations of non-perishable food and unwrapped toys in exchange for reduced library fines.

At the Library: Library offers services to supplement those at main branch

October 26, 2014 -The OCPL Carrboro Branch Library is located inside McDougle Middle School at 900 Old Fayetteville Road in Chapel Hill. Its broad collection for adults and children includes books, audiobooks, DVDs, newspapers and magazines.

October 24, 2014 - The Orange County Public Library (OCPL) Carrboro Branch invites the public to an art exhibit featuring the life of a local family in Brazil, during wartime. The artwork will be displayed from October 30, 2014 - January 18, 2015.

October 16, 2014 - The Orange County Main Library, in partnership with the Compass Center for Women and Families, is continuing the Financial Education Series. A Financial Recovery workshop will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 23.

Orange County Dedicates Little Free Library in Cedar Grove

October 8, 2014 - The Orange County Public Library (OCPL) and Department of Environment, Agriculture and Parks and Recreation (DEAPR) hosted a dedication ceremony to mark the unveiling of the County’s first “Little Free Library.”

Orange County to Host Reception for Student Art Show
October 8, 2014 - The OCPL Carrboro Branch will host a reception to meet the artists behind “Our Identity.” This is a ceramic arts exhibit featuring the work of Chapel Hill High School students. The reception will be held at the Carrboro Branch Library from 2:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 19.

October 1, 2014 - The Orange County Public Library Cybrary location will temporarily close on Wednesday, October 15, to allow for a software upgrade on all computers. Once upgrades are complete, customers will experience a new and improved reservation and printing system.

September 27, 2014 - Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than 11,300 books have been challenged since 1982, according to the American Library Association.

June 25, 2014 - More than 350 people attended the library's first-ever summer reading celebration on Saturday, June 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They took part in craft activities, had their faces painted, enjoyed live music and signed up for summer reading.

May 30, 2014 - The Main Library will host a 22-piece exhibition by artist Marnie Blum. The artwork will be displayed in Hillsborough from June 1 through August 1. The collection of mixed-media art focuses on the universal human experiences of the desire for connection, the reality of separation, and the undying hope of the human spirit.

Orange County Public Library to Open on a Delayed Schedule

May 9, 2014 — The Orange County Public Library (OCPL) Main Library and the OCPL Cybrary will open later than usual on Friday, May 16, and Friday, May 30.  On those days the Main Library will open at 11:00 a.m. and the Cybrary at 11:30 a.m. Library staff is participating in professional development sessions prior to the openings.

May 5, 2014 - Thirty years ago, Gordon Jameson and his wife were traveling in northern Thailand. “We visited a Karen tribal village in a very remote part of the country in the jungle,” Jameson said. “We arrived unannounced with guide and were treated as honored and very welcome guests. I will remember that experience forever.”

May 2, 2014 - Nearly each corner of the Orange County Public Library offers more than just books these days. Pencil drawings and watercolor paintings of trees with twisted branches or colorful leaves hang on one wall, while a shelf on the first floor displays an array of cupcake sculptures; on another wall is a mosaic of Islamic tile, and in another section plastic bottles find new life in three-dimensional art form.

March 31, 2014 - The OCPL Main Library will host a meet-and-greet with Hillsborough folk artist Sam Ezell on Sunday, April 6, from 1 pm – 2 pm. Mr. Ezell’s work has been a part of the “Road Trip: Folk Art from Mike’s Art Truck” exhibit on display at the OCPL Main Library, since January 24.

March 26, 2014 - They would like it to have open spaces with comfy couches. A cafe offering local coffee would be nice. Someone even asked for cats to be lounging in the windows. But books are definitely a must at the proposed Orange County Public Library Southern Branch location. About 50 residents attended a public input session on the proposed county library Tuesday at Carrboro's Hickory Tavern.

February 28, 2014 - Orange County Public Library (OCPL) is pleased to offer select tax forms free to the public this tax season. These documents are available at the OCPL Main Library’s second floor. Patrons can also print up to 10 pages of any tax forms free of charge at the library.
