Commissioners adopt resolution proclaiming Labor Day as Living Wage Day in Orange County

The Orange County Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution August 23 commemorating Labor Day as Living Wage Day in Orange County.

The resolution notes that the minimum wage in North Carolina has not increased above the federal minimum of $7.25 since 2009. A living wage can lift workers out of poverty, and employers reported increased morale and less employee turnover.

Orange County Living Wage, a voluntary, non-profit organization that encourages Orange County employers to pay a living wage, reports that more than 125 employers in the county are certified Living Wage Employers, including Orange County and the towns of Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough, both school systems and OWASA.

For 2017, the organization determined the living wage for the county is at least $13.15 per hour for fulltime employees or $11.65 if employees are provided healthcare coverage.
