Orange County Landfill received 31,000 tons of C&D material in 2000. The following data are based on three waste sorting studies done since 1995.
Different materials are obviously heavier than others, thus they use up landfill space at different rates. The following chart represents estimated data based on the wide variety of weight to volume conversion rates available. Remember, these are estimates; once buried it is impossible to determine exactly how much space one type of crushed material is occupying.
In 1995, corrugated cardboard was banned from disposal at Orange County Landfill. The results have been striking. Prior to the ban, cardboard comprised over 8% of C&D waste by weight and a great deal more than that by volume (because it is so bulky). Now it accounts for less than 3% by weight.
