BOCC Elections Advisory Group

CHARGE

The charge to the BOCC Elections Advisory Group adopted by the Orange County Board of Commissioners on February 2, 2021 is as follows:

To review, research, and evaluate the current method of electing commissioners, as well as any alternative electoral methods or models, including but not limited to single member districts, aligning primary and general election methods, multi-seat elections, and the number of commissioners. The Advisory Group shall assess all options and alternatives pursuant to the following criteria: 

  • Constitutional and statutory requirements and voting rights law
  • Proportionality
  • Equity
  • Uniformity
  • Simplicity/clarity
  • Maximizing voter engagement 

The Advisory Group’s assessment should incorporate, to the extent possible, anticipated population distribution changes based on the 2020 census. 

The Advisory Group may consider options that require enabling legislation; however, it must present to the BOCC options that do not require such authorization.

MEETING INFORMATION

The BOCC Elections Advisory Group (BEAG) conducts regular meetings at 7:00 pm on the 4th Thursday of each month, currently in a virtual format due to current public health concerns.  Members of the Group participate in the meetings remotely.

BOCC Elections Advisory Group Survey

The BOCC Elections Advisory Group developed and then publicized a survey in June 2021 to solicit input from the public on the interests related to the number of seats and method of election for seats on the Orange County Board of Commissioners.  The following documents detail the results from that survey initiative.
